We recently completed a redesigned WordPress website for Health First Community Health Center, a healthcare organization serving communities throughout Western Kentucky with high-quality preventive and primary care, particularly for medically underserved and uninsured individuals.
The project focused on creating a more welcoming, user-friendly website while addressing some significant challenges with the previous site’s content management system.
One of the biggest obstacles involved managing information about healthcare providers and the locations where they practice. The previous website used a complicated relational database structure that required a specific process to maintain these connections. Routine updates were cumbersome, and Health First staff ultimately relied on us to make nearly all changes to the website.
To simplify this process, we developed custom WordPress content types for providers and locations, with a much more intuitive way to manage the relationships between them. Staff can now maintain provider information, update locations, and manage these connections without navigating a complicated series of steps or relying on outside assistance.
For patients, the improved structure makes it easier to find information about Health First’s locations, healthcare providers, and available services. Clear navigation and thoughtfully organized content help visitors quickly find what they need, whether they’re looking for a provider, exploring services, or planning a visit.
The redesign also introduces a clean, modern appearance with responsive layouts that work across phones, tablets, and desktop computers. Accessibility was an important consideration throughout development, with an emphasis on clear navigation, readable content, and inclusive design practices.
Another improvement involved the organization’s web address. During the project, we discovered that HealthFirstCHC.org was available, providing an opportunity to move from the previously used .net domain to a .org address that more closely reflects the organization’s nonprofit mission.
The result is a more accessible, organized, and easy-to-manage website that better serves Health First’s patients while giving staff the tools and flexibility to keep information current.
